Feast Or Famine looks into a study at Penn
State University showing pistachios offer more than 25 vitamins,
minerals and phytonutrients. They are also among the highest
fiber containing nuts. The majority of fats found in pistachios
are the healthy monounsaturated and polyunsaturated oils
and Pistachios may help reduce your risk of developing heart
disease in at least 3 ways:
1) They may help reduce your total cholesterol
levels (about 8%)
2) They may help reduce bad cholesterol (LDL) levels (about
12%)
3) Pistachios may reduce oxidative stress. They are packed
with powerful antioxidants that help mop up harmful free
radicals. (Free radicals may contribute to chronic diseases
such as heart disease).
This episode of Feast Or Famine looks into the important contributions
insects provide to our food supply. When most people hear the
words "insects" and "food crops" in the same
sentence, the immediate response is typically "Use pesticides
to get rid of the insects!" But in this episode of Feast
Or Famine, we are going to look at how certain insects that are
introduced to crops act as beneficial substitutes to pesticides.
The best known pollinator and man's best friend among the insects
is the honey bee. Besides the pollinating services it renders,
this insect provides us with honey, which we eat and beeswax which
we use in making candles, polishes, inks and cosmetics. It is
hard to imagine what life would be like without the natural pest
control, flower pollination, and products provided to us by these
beneficial insects.
With a population of 6.6 billion demanding consumers, food suppliers

are responsible for developing and enforcing food safety standards.
We will also look to successful companies whom we trust to provide
safe food and find out what they are doing above and beyond government
requirements.

This episode of Feast Or Famine looks into the Food Supply Chain,
from farm to fork. The National School Lunch Program
is used as an example throughout this program as we describe the
food safety checks and balances within each of these food supply
chain categories.
Our mission for Feast Or Famine is to produce
a POSITIVE, solution-oriented program focused on improving
education and disseminating accurate scientific information to
the food industry and consumers. I want to leverage the two most
powerful media, television and the internet, to highlight what
the food and agricultural industries are doing right.
This programming series enables professionals who work in the
food and ag industries to learn from one another. Furthermore,
it provides a great opportunity for those outside of those industries
to learn more about the dedication, hard work and the passion
of those who help bring food from farm to fork. We all have a
vested interest in knowing where our food comes from and what
can be done to improve its quality, safety and impact on the environment.
